For some unknown reason, he left Sector Alpha
Cosmosquarkhttp://wiki.sector-alpha.net/index.php?title=AlphaGSM&diff=407AlphaGSM2016-12-04T18:47:26Z
Cosmosquark:

The general idea is that we want a tool that will let users start servers easily and also let us admins manage them easily.

The code is maintained in a private repo at <nowiki>https://bitbucket.org/cosmosquark/samanager</nowiki>

Discord: <nowiki>https://discord.gg/p5PtHat</nowiki>

== General Plan ==

* Run game servers inside of screen sessions (with a specially formated session name) as the user
* Games are started either directly by the user or by @reboot cron jobs for the user
* Admins connect using a managment script run as root that changes users with su and then runs commands on the server as the relevent user
* Admins can also run commands on all available servers which just does the above on a list of session found using ''ls''
* Commands will include at least the following
** Create - setups a new game server either using the supplied args or by prompting the user for information
** Start - starts a game server
** Stop - stops the game server
** Message - sends a message to all users on the game server
** Connect - connects to the game server directly in such a way that you can directly send commands to it
** Status - check the status of the server
** Set - set a setting in the servers data dump
** Backup - backup the game servers data and settings
* if a wildcard stop is done a list of all servers stopped is stored in a file in roots homedir so root can restart with a wildcard start command

== Implementation ==

The plan is to implement this using a set of scripts probably mainly written in python.

The first step is to write a basic "connect and send commands to screen sessions" module. Then each game server can have module that translates a request into the input to send to screen.

Then we need to implement a module for each game server. Each game server will have a settings file stored in json format in the users ~/.gsm-games/ folder which at the least will store the info of which game server module to load. Beyond that all interpretation of config is up to the game server module.

The top level script will be run with commands line of the form
:
gsm *|[USER/]SERVERNAME COMMAND [ARGS...]

This will depending on the first argument do one of the following
*
SERVERNAME
- load the config for the server and translate
COMMAND
and
ARGS
to a format to send to the screen session and then send it.
*
USER/SERVERNNAME
- use sudo to try and run itself as the relevent user and with just
SERVERNAME
instead of USER/SERVERNAME
*
*
- depending on the command build a list of "all" servers and then run itself on each of them with the command and args as specified
** For Stop, Status and Message this will mean get a list of all screen sockets and use that to get a list of all game servers. For stop it will also write a list of the stopped servers in the current users home directory.
** For Start use the list of servers stopped by the latest stop command
** For all others if run as a normal user then pick up allthe configs from their config directory
** For all others if run as root fail

== Status ==
* The general framework is now implemented and works
* We don't currently have logic for finding "all" servers. I will add this shortly
* Docs are being added as I get round to it
* The Minecraft backend is mostly there but needs a few more features.
* All other backends are still to implement
* There is a slight bug on running command on a single server owned by another user in that it shows the internal "flag string" (this "flag string" is needed so that when multiple are run it can tell when sudo has finished processing)

== Usefull Bits and Pieces ==
* Command to start screen session disconnected

screen -dmLS SESSIONNAME COMMAND [ARGS...]

* Command to send some input to the program in a screen session

screen -S SESSIONNAME -p 0 -X stuff "INPUT"

* Code to emulate
tail -f
- This is needed to programatically check the output of a server.
Basically we open the log before we send a command. Seek to the end, send our command and then keep reading any output given till we decide we have read enough and then close the file.
** code handles more cases - <nowiki>http://ftp.tummy.com/pub/tummy/Python/tail.py</nowiki>
** more pythonic style and returns output as a iterator - <nowiki>http://code.google.com/p/pytailer/source/browse/src/tailer/__init__.py</nowiki>

Useful stuff for potentially setting up a bash completion script
* sudo sudo -llu mc-staircase -U www-data /usr/local/lib/alphagsm/alphagsm-downloads
** This tells you if a user (e.g. www-data) would be able to run the command (e.g. /usr/local/lib/alphagsm/alphagsm-downloads) as another user (e.g. mx-staircase)
** The reason for running this as root via sudo is as it then doesn't ask for a password and this seems to be the only way around this. I am suggesting we could add an entry in sudoers that says any user can run this exact command (but with any usernames) but only for a specific command (or maybe two commands)
Cosmosquarkhttp://wiki.sector-alpha.net/index.php?title=New_Sector_Alpha_Website&diff=262New Sector Alpha Website2013-12-22T01:38:14Z
Cosmosquark: Created page with "The New Sector Alpha website has been a hot topic within the Sector Alpha community since mid 2013 Cosmosquark has always wanted to create the new Sector Alpha website since ..."

The New Sector Alpha website has been a hot topic within the Sector Alpha community since mid 2013

Cosmosquark has always wanted to create the new Sector Alpha website since mid 2012. He was unsatisfied with the current available web application software available on the market.

Sector Alpha was using Vbulletin 4 from July 2011 (when dark field games used to share the same platform as Sector Alpha on the old wordpress phpbb combination), right up until October 2013 when the website got hacked. Cosmosquark was displeased with the upcoming Vbullitin software and the direction that Internet Brands was heading with Vbulletin. Especially with the knowledge of the flop of Vbulletin 5.

== Vbulletin Hacked ==

Around about September 2013, with no email notification to any owners of the Vbulletin liscence, this blog post appeared

http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forum/vbulletin-announcements/vbulletin-announcements_aa/3991423-vbulletin-install-system-exploit-vbulletin-4-1-vbulletin-5

and then later, Sector Alpha was one of the thousands of sites to be hacked from this vbulletin vunurability

Linux is a Unix-like computer operating system (in a similar manner that a Mac is a Unix-like computer operating system) assembled under the model of free and open source software development and distribution. The defining component of Linux is the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released 5 October 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Since the C compiler that builds Linux and the main supporting user space system tools and libraries originated in the GNU Project, initiated in 1983 by Richard Stallman, the Free Software Foundation prefers the name GNU/Linux.

There are many variants or distributions of GNU/Linux, the main distribution that Sector Alpha uses on it's servers are Ubuntu.

UNIX is an operating system which was first developed in the 1960s, and has been under constant development ever since. By operating system, we mean the suite of programs which make the computer work. It is a stable, multi-user, multi-tasking system for servers, desktops and laptops.

UNIX systems also have a graphical user interface (GUI) similar to Microsoft Windows which provides an easy to use environment. However, knowledge of UNIX is required for operations which aren't covered by a graphical program, or for when there is no windows interface available, for example, in a telnet session.

There are many different versions of UNIX, although they share common similarities. The most popular varieties of UNIX are Sun Solaris, GNU/Linux, and MacOS X.

== Unix Operating System ==
=== Kernel ===

The kernel of UNIX is the hub of the operating system: it allocates time and memory to programs and handles the filestore and communications in response to system calls. As an illustration of the way that the shell and the kernel work together, suppose a user types rm myfile (which has the effect of removing the file myfile). The shell searches the filestore for the file containing the program rm, and then requests the kernel, through system calls, to execute the program rm on myfile. When the process rm myfile has finished running, the shell then returns the UNIX prompt % to the user, indicating that it is waiting for further commands.

=== Shell ===
The shell acts as an interface between the user and the kernel. When a user logs in, the login program checks the username and password, and then starts another program called the shell. The shell is a command line interpreter (CLI). It interprets the commands the user types in and arranges for them to be carried out. The commands are themselves programs: when they terminate, the shell gives the user another prompt (% on our systems).

The adept user can customise his/her own shell, and users can use different shells on the same machine. Staff and students in the school have the tcsh shell by default.

The tcsh shell has certain features to help the user inputting commands.

Filename Completion - By typing part of the name of a command, filename or directory and pressing the [Tab] key, the tcsh shell will complete the rest of the name automatically. If the shell finds more than one name beginning with those letters you have typed, it will beep, prompting you to type a few more letters before pressing the tab key again.

History - The shell keeps a list of the commands you have typed in. If you need to repeat a command, use the cursor keys to scroll up and down the list or type history for a list of previous commands.

Sector Alpha Gaming Network aims to provide a fun and enjoyable gaming experience in the games that we play. Whether that be on a big MMO server or on our own Sector Alpha game servers.

Our Administrators, Moderators and Game leaders volunteer their free time to keep this gaming community operational for people to enjoy for free 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If it was not for their time, we would not be here too.

However, our operational costs are not cheap. Sector Alpha needs financial support in order to sustain itself and to continue to provide the gaming servers and the website that we do today. Advertising alone is not enough to sustain what we currently have If it was not for our current subscribers, we would not be able to continue to provide what we are doing today, or even to provide it in the first place.

Thus if you feel like contributing towards Sector Alpha. You can either support us with a one time financial donation. However, should you wish for something in return for your support, you could consider taking up one of the Sector Alpha subscriber packages outlined here. Unlike most other gaming communities, we are able to provide a service for those who are willing to pay for a Sector Alpha Subscription. We do not believe in accepting money and to not give you something in return. This varies on what subscription package you take out from having privileges on our game servers to having an account on our server for computation, web hosting and file storage.

== How to Donate ==

At Sector Alpha, we do not believe in shoving adverts down your throats, neither do we believe in spamming our game servers with adverts and donation requests either.

However, if you would like to support Sector Alpha financially via a donation. You can donate any amount that you want, even a 1p click http://sector-alpha.net/misc.php?do=donate if you would like to donate or read on to find out more. If you do this, we will add you to the donators list http://sector-alpha.net/misc.php?do=donlist

We operate on a non profit basis, we do not employ people at this stage (although it would be amazing if we could). So any extra cash that we do get left over will be saved and reinvested back into Sector Alpha (e.g buying bigger servers, web software etc).Sector Alpha donators will have their name added to the donations list as a sign of gratitude and respect for their financial contribution to Sector Alpha.

If you donate more than £2 to Sector Alpha, you will be added to the donator's group on Sector Alpha and aquire a nice green tag in your name for a month. If you donate more than £200, you will be added to the donator's group permanently. No matter what you donate, you will be added to the donators list

We only donations in £ - British Pound (Stirling)

All of the donations and payments are handled via paypal. You can acquire a paypal account here https://www.paypal.com. Paypal is a secure and reliable way of dealing with transactions with Sector Alpha. This is a safe and secure way to donate or pay for subscriptions

Bloodlust80 manages and processes the donations and will try to respond to your payment within 48 hours unless other notice is provided (e.g being on holiday). If you have any questions or complaints about the payment and donation system, Send a private message Bloodlust80 or email bloodlust80@sector-alpha.net and you should get a response ASAP.
Cosmosquarkhttp://wiki.sector-alpha.net/index.php?title=Subscription_Service&diff=145Subscription Service2013-05-31T01:37:32Z
Cosmosquark: /* Contract/legality of subscription service */

As well as operating as a gaming community, Sector Alpha also has subscription based services on offer. Right now we offer user account subscriptions which include a server accounts for your webhosting and file storage needs, as well as other features relating to Sector Alpha. This is A good subscription service to take up if you want to host your own blog or website. More features to this subscription method will be added overtime. A limited amount of setup support will be provided as well. See below for more details.

We also offer a range of hassle free game servers. Do you wish to avoid the hassle of having to manage a game server yourself? Would you like your game server to be looked after by fellow gamers? Account fair useage and infomation

Sector Alpha provides access to the server as it is stated on this page. This page can be updated and edited at any point in time. It is up to the user to check this page when infomation has changed (which will be announced).

It is up to the individual user to report any potential security breaches with regards to their account. The Sooner we know, the sooner we can change your password.

Individual users are not permitted to share their account by any means with anyone else.

We believe in not restricting the user to preset values. If more Hard disk space is requested or SQL storage is requested, we may upgrade this for you. You have access to a generous amount of RAM and CPU as well, but any abuse of this privalage will mean termination of your account with consistant abuse.

If your after something more "interesting" i.e you feel your likely to consume alot of resources, then please see our server hosting service page for more infomation on what service we could provide you

If you are wanting to host a game server on your account space, then please look into the hosting services page instead. Although theoretically you could install a game server, all the ports that exist on the server will be blocked so nobody will be able to connect to it, so there is no real point trying to install a game server on your user account space.

Illegal content (e.g pornography of minors) not permitted on your account space at all. Pornography is NOT allowed in your public html space (the public_html directory), but everywhere else is fine.

You CAN use our server to backup your own files e.g documents and music. But distribution of such files is not permitted if copyright protection exists around that particular file.

If you would like a particular program or service installed, ask away.

Yes, you can host your own personal website and blog on here.

If you would like any assistance on getting set up with your server account, then do not hesitate to ask bloodlust80 via PM or email.

The server will need to be rebooted from time to time (usually for security updates), should a reboot need to occur, subscribers will be given at least 24 hours if the reboot is absolutely urgent, 72 hours for something important. But otherwise, we will do our best to have important reboots occur at the beginning of each month (and notification will be there should a reboot be occuring).

Apart from essential maintenance, we aim for 99.9% uptime with 100Mbps upload/download speed serverwide.

--------------------------------------------------
the tl;dr version
we won't be violating your privacy.
1. What information do we gather?

1.1 We gather information that relates to, and can identify you (e.g. your email address) and information that does not identify you (e.g. a visitor’s behaviour patterns when they visit our website). We collect information that does not identify you to evaluate our site, ensure that our site and services run properly and ensure we are paid for advertising services we offer.

2. How do we gather information?

2.1 Information is gathered in two ways:

(1) indirectly (e.g. browsing this website); and

(2) directly (e.g when you buy a subscription, sign up to create a Sector Alpha profile, access our game servers or when you subscribe to our youtube channel or follow us on twitter).

3. Use of your information

3.1 We might use your personal information to:

(1) remember you when you visit our website and track your browsing patterns by using cookies. You can prevent this; section 5 deals with this in more detail.

(2) ensure that your paid subscriptions are correctly administrated and handled

(3) contact you by email if an Administrator needs to do so, or to contact you by email in any of our newsletters

(4) ensure materials on the website are presented in the most effective manner for you and your computer.

(5) collate and log numeric internet addresses to improve the website and to monitor website usage.

(6) keep you up to date with the threads that you are following

3.2 If you have subscribed to any of or services, we will use the information you provide to keep you updated on those services unless you tell us otherwise.

4. Accessing and updating your personal information

4.1 You can update your details by accessing your account settings pages http://sector-alpha.net/usercp.php

4.2 You have the right to access the personal information held about you. To obtain a copy of the personal information we hold about you, please send an email to bloodlust80@sector-alpha.net. There will be an administrative charge of £10 for providing a copy of this information. You can make this payment as a form of a donation here http://sector-alpha.net/misc.php?do=donate

5. Cookies

5.1 A cookie is a small piece of information that is placed on your computer when you visit certain websites. Find out more about the use of cookies on http://www.cookiecentral.com.

5.2 We use cookies to:

(1) remember you when you visit this website to keep track of your browsing patterns and to build up a profile of how you and other users use the website.

(2) make our website work as efficiently as possible.

(3) administer services to you and to advertisers.

5.3 Most browsers allow you to turn off cookies. To do this look at the “help” menu on your browser. Switching off cookies may restrict your use of the website and/or delay or affect the way in which it operates.

6. Third party advertising cookies

6.1 Most of the advertisements you see on the website are generated by third parties.

Some of these third parties generate their own cookies (or web beacons) to track how many people have seen a particular advertisement (or use the services of third parties to do this), and to track how many people have seen it more than once. These cookies cannot be used to identify an individual; they can only be used for statistical purposes, for example, in providing you with advertisements that are more relevant to your interests. Some of the information gleaned from third party cookies will be aggregated with other anonymous information for statistical purposes. The third party companies that generate these cookies have their own, very strict, privacy policies but we don't have access to these cookies; other than allowing them to be served, we have no role to play in these cookies at all (although we may use statistical information arising from these third party cookies and provided to us by third parties, to improve the targeting of advertisements to users of the website).

6.2 If you would like to disable "third party" cookies generated by advertisers or providers of targeted advertising services, you can turn them off by going to the third party's website and getting them to generate a one-time "no thanks" cookie that will stop any further cookies being written to your machine. Here are links to the two main third party advertising platforms we use, each of which have instructions on how to do this:

http://www.doubleclick.com/us/about_doubleclick/privacy/ad-cookie/

http://www.audiencescience.com/privacy

6.3 You can also visit the trade body representing these advertising companies for more information on how to opt out of these cookies: http://youronlinechoices.com/

7. Security

7.1 The password you provide when registering with the website is encrypted to ensure protection against unauthorised access to your personal information.

7.2 No data transmission over the Internet can be entirely secure, and therefore we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information and/or use of the website. Any information that you send is at your own risk and may be read by others. However once we have received your personal information we use strict procedures to protect the security of your personal information.

7.3 There is no option for SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) browsing at this moment. So please be careful accessing this website from public places. We plan on looking into SSL features in the near future.

8. Disclosing your information

8.1 All of the information that you send to us will not be sold on or given away to a third party.

9. Where we store your personal information

9.1 We store your personal information on our servers.

10. Changes to this Policy

10.1 If we change our Policy, we will post the changes on this page. Please check the website regularly for any changes to this Policy.

11. If you don't feel we're adhering to this Policy, what should you do?

11.1 If you believe that we have not adhered to this Policy, please notify us by email at bloodlust80@sector-alpha.net and we will try to solve the problem promptly.
Cosmosquarkhttp://wiki.sector-alpha.net/index.php?title=Cookie_and_Privacy_policy&diff=136Cookie and Privacy policy2013-05-31T01:19:34Z
Cosmosquark: Created page with "This Privacy and Cookie Policy explains how Sector Alpha uses personal information we collect and how you can limit our use of that personal data. ---------------------------..."

Sorry ben :P
Cosmosquarkhttp://wiki.sector-alpha.net/index.php?title=Unix&diff=89Unix2013-05-28T00:10:23Z
Cosmosquark: /* Unix Operating System = */

== Unix Operating System ==
=== Kernel ===

=== Shell ===

Cosmosquark
